![]() The ancestors of modern ballistic grenade launchers, however, were simplistic muzzle-loading devices using a stake-like body to mount a short, large-bore gun barrel into which an explosive or incendiary device could be inserted these were later refined into shoulder-fired blunderbuss-like firearms referred to as " hand mortars". The earliest devices that could be referred to as grenade launchers were slings, which could be used to throw early grenado fuse bombs. History Early precursors French grenade launchers from 1747 Some armored fighting vehicles also mount fixed arrays of short-range, single-shot grenade launchers as a means of defense. Larger crew-served automatic grenade launchers such as the Mk 19 are mounted on tripods or vehicles. Grenade launchers are produced in the form of standalone weapons (either single-shot or repeating) or as attachments mounted to a parent firearm, usually a rifle. The most common type are man-portable, shoulder-fired weapons issued to individuals, although larger crew-served launchers are issued at higher levels of organization by military forces. ![]() Today, the term generally refers to a class of dedicated firearms firing unitary grenade cartridges. Sure expose those sliders via an 'Advanced' mode but give the rest of us a normal UI. So do photo editing programs - except for Darktable.Įxposing the pandoras box of underlying sliders is just confusing and broken. For example a word processor or a spreadsheet exposes common idioms which are tried and proven, and expected by users. That's all the commercial programs like lightroom and capture one give us and that's all we need. There are certain editing concepts that normal photographers are used to using, like contrast, shadows, highlights, texture, dehaze, exposure, saturation etc. The problem with the Darktable user interface is that its like an API for image processing geeks (0.005% of the population). There's also new support for some old cameras, like the Nikon D1H, which is interesting – and good news for retro camera enthusiasts. In addition to software functionality changes and improvements, darktable 4.2.0 supports expanded cameras, including the Canon EOS M2, Fujifilm X-H2 (compressed), X-H2S (compressed), X-T30 II (compressed), X-T5 (compressed), Leica D-Lux 6, Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246), Nikon Z9, Olympus E-10, E-M10 Mark IIIs, E-P7, numerous Samsung cameras, the Sony A7R V and more. A full breakdown of all changes can be viewed here. ![]() There are many more minor changes, including WebP read support, regional date/time format support in thumbnail tooltips, JFIF support, and bug squashing. Other big changes include a rewritten slideshow tool that offers a better user experience, a new drop-down menu to provide more convenient access to filters, better readability for the UI of the range rating filter, and the ability to read and write JPEG XL images. The lens correction module within darktable can extract the lens correction information from metadata. You can see the effects of these corrections when opening affected images in numerous photo editors, now including darktable 4.2.0. Some cameras record lens correction information and bake it into the image's EXIF metadata. This has numerous consequences, including allowing users to use a second darkroom image window with focus peaking and ISO-12646 color assessment modes, an improved snapshot module with a dynamically generated view (which can be zoomed and panned using the keyboard or mouse), identical previews across multiple windows, and the ability to preview the effect of a user-generated style on an image before applying the effect. When working with multiple windows, users can now take advantage of the pixelpipe used for image display in the darkroom view. Accordingly, it has replaced 'clip highlights as the new default algorithm within the app. The new algorithms within the highlight reconstruction module are 'inpaint opposed' and 'segmentation based.' The former algorithm 'has proved very stable and provides good results in many images,' writes the darktable team. You can use the module to expand or condense the dynamic range of a scene to correspond to the dynamic range of a display. ![]() As outlined in the in-depth darktable 4.2.0 user manual, you use the Sigmoid display transform module to remap the tonal range of image using a generalized log-logistic curve. Starting with the Sigmoid display transform module, this can be used in place of the existing filmic and base curve modules. Among the key additions are a Sigmoid display transform module, a pair of new algorithms within the highlight reconstruction module, a reworked pixelpipe for image display in the darkroom view, improved user interface, lens correction information being accessible from EXIF metadata, improved slideshow and more. Sunscald can also crack open the bark when the temperatures plunge after sunset. ![]() The leaves turn brown after they are scalded by bright sunshine in cold weather. Your Japanese maple may have sunscald of its foliage. A tree may also suffer frozen roots if it is growing in a container above the ground. You may see other types of Japanese maple winter damage, including buds and stems that are killed by the cold temperatures. They are not the only possible problems though. One of the most obvious signs of winter damage of Japanese maple are broken branches, and these often result from heavy loads of ice or snow. Japanese maple winter dieback can also be caused by drying winds, scalding sun, or frozen soil. As they refreeze, they can burst and ultimately die. Often, when the sun is warm in winter, cells in the maple tree thaw during the day, only to refreeze again at night. Heavy snow is often the culprit when your slender maple tree suffers broken branches, but winter damage of Japanese maple can be caused by various aspects of the cold season. Read on for information on Japanese maple winter dieback and what you can do to prevent it. Many times the trees can pull through just fine. The first approach for a subhyaloid hemorrhage is always conservative observation. Besides, bilateral hemorrhages in the vitreous, sub-hyaloid, or intra-retinal hemorrhages are also seen. Subhyaloid hemorrhage is seen typically in Terson syndrome and Valsalva retinopathy. Roth spots are generally asymptomatic and typically resolve with treatment of the underlying disease, especially subacute bacterial endocarditis. Hemorrhages seen in retinal vein occlusions are not treated per se, but the retinal edema or the neovascularization, which follows as a sequela, needs to be treated. Most dot and blot, splinter, and flame-shaped hemorrhages are not vision-threatening and are usually found in the posterior pole sparing the fovea and can be observed. Direct intervention for retinal hemorrhages is indicated in submacular, subhyaloid, and vitreous hemorrhages because of their potential to damage vision irreversibly. ![]() Hemorrhages that do not obscure or threaten vision do not warrant immediate treatment, and the primary systemic disorder causing the hemorrhages needs to be diagnosed and addressed. Characteristic clinical features include extensive bilateral multilayered retinal hemorrhages, intracranial injury (hemorrhage/hypoxic-ischemic injury), and occult fractures (ribs and long bone metaphysis).Ī solitary retinal hemorrhage can be observed and followed up for progression in size and number. This comes under abusive head trauma (AHT), is seen in young children caused by repeated acceleration-deceleration injury. Breakthrough hemorrhage into vitreous also happens in malignant choroidal melanoma, retinal vascular occlusions, and idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (IPCV). A subretinal hemorrhage can cause a breakthrough bleeding into the vitreous. They are commonly seen due to the rupture of a vessel, as seen commonly in proliferative diabetic retinopathy, retinal arteriolar microaneurysm, or during posterior vitreous detachment. Chronic hemorrhages appear as diffuse vitreous clouding with settled blood inferiorly. īleeding into the vitreous cavity is seen as fresh blood clots with sudden onset of floaters. Valsalva retinopathy is a pre-retinal hemorrhage caused by a sudden increase in intra-thoracic or intra-abdominal pressure. Hemorrhage may be present in the vitreous, subhyaloid, or intraretinal /sub-internal limiting membrane. Terson syndrome is intraocular hemorrhage associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, or traumatic brain injury. Causes include Terson syndrome, Valsalva retinopathy, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and proliferative retinopathy after retinal vein occlusions. Preretinal hemorrhages are “boat” or ‘D’ shaped hemorrhages which collect between the posterior limiting membrane of the vitreous and internal limiting membrane (ILM) of the retina. They are commonly seen in choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM), choroidal tumors, and choroidal rupture secondary to acute trauma. These hemorrhages are located between RPE and Bruch membrane and appear dark red with well-defined sharp borders. Sub-macular hemorrhages are commonly seen in choroidal neovascular membranes secondary to ARMD. Such hemorrhages are commonly seen in ARMD, presumed ocular histoplasmosis, high myopia, PCV, retinal macroaneurysm, and trauma. The hemorrhages are deep red in color and broader in shape with diffuse margins. ![]() These hemorrhages occur between the photoreceptor layer and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Purtscher-like retinopathy is seen in acute pancreatitis, renal failure, and autoimmune disease. Retinal findings are intraretinal whitening, cotton wool spots, and intraretinal hemorrhages. Purtsher retinopathy is an occlusive microvasculopathy associated with cranial or thoracic compressive trauma. Common causes for such hemorrhages include diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, ocular ischemic syndrome, sickle cell retinopathy, and juxta foveal telangiectasia. These are dense, dark red, sharply outlined, and are seen in disorders that affect the pre-venular deep capillary layer. ![]() These dot and blot hemorrhages are found within the inner nuclear and outer plexiform layers of the retina. The Goody Ouchless elastics most closely resemble the rubber bands I grew up wearing in my hair. ![]() If you prefer a basic hair tie (i.e., not a scrunchie, ribbon, or coil), this is the best of the ones we tested, but it’s not without flaws. Still, if you’re after a coil hair tie, I noticed these same faults with all of the others, so I feel confident that Kitsch is the best you’ll get. This product lost points for comfort factors because it tugged a bit when I pulled it out of my hair and it was too tight to wear comfortably around my wrist. While I wouldn’t say any of them match my hair color, they blend in and look unobtrusive enough if you’re going for an understated look. These coils I tested came in four shades designed to match brunette hair (there's also a set for blondes, as well as a pack of clear coils). And, as promised, there were no creases at the end of a long day of wear in my freshly blown-out hair (i.e., when it’s most likely to crease). Two turns around the hair were enough to hold my hair snugly enough for daily wear, while a third turn was preferable for exercise. Plus, the coils hold hair in place well, so you don’t have to stretch the hair tie to its full capacity for a good grip. Though they have a finite stretch due to their plastic material, they are surprisingly malleable. In terms of function, the Kitsch Spiral Hair Coils promise to be “kind on hair, hold hair in place, and leave no marks or creases.” Overall, the product delivered. The Lululemon Skinny Scrunchies come in packs of six containing multiple color combinations from neutrals to vibrant hues. The only time some hair escaped was while I slept, but that’s a very common occurrence for my slippery, straight locks, no matter what type of hair tie I use. Throughout the day, which included a Peloton ride, a walk outside, and everyday housework, I didn’t experience any slippage. As a nice bonus, the Lululemon scrunchie sits loosely on my wrist-not loose enough to fall off, but not tight enough to leave an indent. ![]() And because there are no grommets or hardware, the tie doesn’t snag at all when you slip it out of your hair, either. Though it only stretches to a certain point because of its fabric construction, it stretched well enough to wrap around my hair three times, creating a hold that was nice and strong, but with no strain. The hair tie proved to be very comfortable during both wake and sleeping hours, too. The material feels similar to breakaway athletic pants-soft but textured and slightly water-resistant. Knowing Lululemon is a go-to for active individuals, I wondered if the benefits may justify the price.Īt first glance, the hair ties look very well constructed. Though undoubtedly pricey, these scrunchies intrigued me because they promise to “stay put while reducing hair breakage,” and slipping is something I often have trouble with, especially during exercise. ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm not trying to beat the market for a trade occurring, which is why I used those updated odds to calculate a 30% chance that he's traded to the Broncos and a 70% chance he stays with the Packers. The name 'Chamber of Horrors' is often credited to a contributor to Punch in 1845, but Marie Tussaud appears to have originated it herself, using it in advertising as early as 1843. At this time, her exhibits included Colonel Despard, Arthur Thistlewood, William Corder and Burke and Hare, in addition to those listed above. In 1835, Madame Tussaud set up a permanent exhibition in London, and here the 'Separate Room' became the 'Chamber of Horrors'. Here Curtius displayed wax figures of notorious French criminals who had been executed, as well as members of the French royal family and aristocracy who had been guillotined during the Revolution. The forerunner of Tussaud's Chamber of Horrors was the Caverne des Grands Voleurs (the Cavern of the Great Thieves) which had been founded by Dr Philippe Curtius as an adjunct to his main exhibition of waxworks in Paris in 1782. Beginnings The Chamber of Horrors in 1849 by Richard Doyle It closed in April 2016 but reopened 6 years later in October 2022. Filmmakers, too, have sought inspiration from wax museums, and Bloom analyzes works from the silent era to such waxwork-themed Hollywood horror films as Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) and Mad Love (1935). In particular, she connects the myth of Pygmalion to the obsession with wax statues of women in the nineteenth-century fetishization of prostitutes and female corpses and as depicted in such “wax fictions” as Dickens’s The Old Curiosity Shop (1841). Bloom explores the motif of the wax figure in European and American literature and art.
